About the Author

Mary Pat Johns’ writing career began once she retired from teaching speech and writing. She has written devotions for an online publication, had short stories published by Chicken Soup for the Soul, and wrote a column for the Victoria Advocate, a local newspaper.

Countin’ On Jesse, her first novel debuted in 2023, and books 2 & 3 of the Valiant series, Lovin’ On Red and Glitter and the Grouch released in 2024. God put it in her heart to tell stories of brave veterans and their reintegration into civilian life after suffering the traumas of war.

She writes Christian romance because when we see life through the hope of Christ’s sacrifice, we find that happily ever after is God’s idea.

More from Mary Pat

The ending of a series is always bittersweet. I will miss the characters, but I remind myself they are in a good place. Kind of like my grown children. They have their own lives to live, and I’m not as “hands-on” as I was during their formative years. If you weren’t around for the beginning of this series, no worries. Each book tells its own story. In the meantime, stay tuned. I have other stories to write. That said, I probably won’t wander too far from Valiant—the strong, safe place where it all began.

Interview

What has been your greatest writing achievement to date?

With the release of Waitin’ On Paige, July 8th, 2025, I will have completed a four-book series. It was quite the learning curve. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure it would happen.

What do you find the hardest part of the writing process?

The first draft is the hardest. I’m a blend of plotter and pantser. Overall, I usually know where the story is going, but scene to scene presents a challenge.

Do you use humor at all in your writing?

Yes! I try to lighten things up regularly. It’s hard to write (and live) through unrelieved tension and/or sadness, so depending on character issues, so I often take a moment to include humor in banter or through what I call “a life moment.” It balances the tough things that happen.

What do you wish you knew before you started writing?

I wish I had known that it takes years to gain a readership. It also takes years of practicing the craft and good input to be an excellent writer.

What are you currently working on?

I’m finishing a Christmas novella that will be part of a collection with other three other authors. It’s the first time I’ve taken part in one, and it’s been fun. When I’m done with that, I’ll start a new series, this time in the genre of romantic suspense. My publisher says that I almost write romantic suspense, but not quite. In this new series, with her blessing, I’m going for the whole enchilada. Plenty of danger and mysterious circumstances.
