DID YOU KNOW? YOUR CHRISTIAN WALK HAS A LOT IN COMMON WITH THE LIFE OF A NAVY SAILOR!

Yes! It seems too hard to believe but it is true. Sailors experience hardship, trust, fatigue, worry, disappointment, joy–and so do you! A sailor’s life is filled with the common experiences you have every day of your Christian walk.

OPERATIONS is a compilation of over fifty devotional stories composed by DAVID REID BROWN while he served at sea. These stories present the life of sailors in a way that touches on topics that mirror your daily Christian walk. Each story concludes with a practical application section, relevant scripture, and prayer.

DAVID REID BROWN has first-hand knowledge in understanding the life of a Sailor because he lived it. As former Navy Chaplain, he also understands Biblical truth and how to identify spiritual principles and experiences that Christians and sailors share.

In this book, readers will be:

  • Surprised to learn the daily lives of Christians and Sailors are quite similar.
  • Inspired by sea stories that connect with Biblical truths.
  • Amazed by the selfless sacrifice of Sailors, Marines, and their families.

Still curious? Read this book and find out how God will meet your curiosity with a stronger faith in Him and a deeper admiration for the service of military members and their families.

More from David

Did you know? The art on the front cover of my book, OPERATIONS, was designed and created by one of my Ninth Grade Art Students. Yes, it’s true. I recognized that this young artist had the technical skill and artistic flair to create the unique cover art required for this book when he was just in the sixth grade!

FOR OVER TWENTY-ONE YEARS, I have had the distinct privilege of serving thousands of sailors, Marines, and their families across the nation, upon every major ocean, as well as overseas. I am most proud to have shared a common bond of service, sacrifice, and devotion. OPERATIONS is my patriotic tribute to them.

Interview

Tell us about your writing process.

First, thank you for the opportunity to share my insights on your blog. I would also like to thank you for your insightful questions. They were so good that I could have answered all of them, not just these five.

My writing process always begins with what I call “Fire Thoughts”, which are inspirational writing prompts that I receive from the Lord. They usually occur in the early morning hours when I rise for devotions. After I pray and read scripture, God will speak something into my heart that has to be recorded (written down). The inspiration for all my books comes to me this way. Also, there are times when I will see or hear things on social media or in print that provoke a Fire Thought. I will quickly copy it down and keep it for when I have a chance to develop it. One thing that I always have with me is a journal, whether at home or at work, because I never know when God is going to send some “fire”.

Do you use humor at all in your writing?

Yes! One of the richest aspects of my writing is the use of humor. It has become more valuable as my writing journey has switched from Christian devotionals to poetry. Humor is an indispensable aspect of poetry writing. The ability to laugh at life or see the humor in life is a necessary part of writing poetry.

Give us an insight into your faith in the Lord.

My faith in the Lord is my whole life.

I have been a Christian since I was nineteen years old. I was raised in a Christian family, but, as you know, I had to decide to receive the Lord on my own. About two years later, I felt a call to the ministry and began training to become a church pastor. I did that for the next three years. Then, I met a recruiter from the U.S. Navy, who told me I could serve in ministry as a chaplain. I joined the reserves for one year and loved it so much that I decided to serve on active duty. Twenty-one years later, I retired from the Navy, but just before doing so, I felt another call to become a teacher. I became a part-time art teacher at a local Christian school. The following year, it became full-time, and I have been a teacher ever since (going on 11 years now).

Writing is the latest way in which I express my faith. It’s becoming the one thing that I enjoy about ministry, even more than teaching.

What do you wish you knew before you started writing?

I wish I knew I needed a mentor, an editor, and a marketing consultant. These are the things that I never thought about as a new author. I was so focused on the creative aspects of writing and cover design that I never factored in the business aspects. My first series suffered because of my ignorance and approach. Now, I take care of the business first, or as I write the manuscript. Also, I would advise that any new authors take this approach. It will save them time, money, and sharpen their wisdom about the writing business.

What are you currently working on?

“Operations” is the fourth of five volumes within the “Psalms From The Sea” series. It was published late last year. The final volume, “Journeys,” will be released this fall.

I am about to publish my second book of poetry called “Relatables: Common Poetry for Common Matters”.  It is a series of ninety poems on subjects from everyday life: sandwiches, fitness, politics, cold medicine, entertainment, and pants. Each subject is connected to a spiritual point and scripture at the end of the chapter. I am planning to release it in April, which is National Poetry Month.

Here’s what’s next in my writing/publishing journey:

-          “Journeys” (Psalms From The Sea, Volume V; devotional, late summer 2026)

-          “Feet of Clay: Reflections on the Purpose and Power of our Flaws” (Poetry; Fall 2026)

-          “Sisters in My Head: Reflections on the Enduring Influence of Women in My Life” (April 2027)
