More from Keon

How would you like to get a personal letter from someone? Most people like real mail, especially if its from a person who truly cares about you. What if that letter not only shared their affection but it revealed the answers to some of life’s most profound questions? God has written you such a letter, the Bible! Actually, the Bible is a collection of all God’s written messages to you.

This fact was impressed on me as I read the New Testament book of Hebrews. It opens with a bold statement. God had given messages to humanity in ancient times through prophets and angels. Finally, God sent Jesus, the Ultimate Messenger with the ultimate message that is vital for every person.

This captured my attention and made me wonder how the previous messages in the Bible led up to Jesus and His message? Researching that question took me on an exciting journey of discovery, encouragement, and warning in God’s Word. The result is my book, Have You Heard from God Lately? It summarizes major Bible themes to help you navigate the amazing Book. I hope it inspires you to open God’s letter and realize just how much He cares for you!

Interview

What do you find the hardest part of the writing process?

Finding a quiet time to write is a challenge for me. It takes a while to get into my writing zone and once I’m there, I do not want to come out. So, when someone calls or something around the house needs attention, I feel frustrated because my creativity bubble is burst. Then it takes extra time (which I don’t have to spare) to get back into the zone once the interruption is past. Therefore, I usually write early in the morning before the noise of the day can distract me, but since I still have a job, that’s a small window of time on weekdays.

Tell us about your writing process.

Once I have a book idea, I’ll do initial research for maybe two weeks. I’ll use that information to choose major themes and put them into an outline. Then I start writing individual chapters and do more research more as I go. Sometimes I need to stop writing for several days to investigate a subject in more detail to ensure the chapter is accurate and fits with larger themes. Once my draft is done, I’ll dictate it to a computer to get an electronic version. That’s the start of my review and editing process. Of course, speech to text leaves a lot for me to correct, so I’ll go through the book several times before feeling it’s ready for someone else to proof. Once the finished draft is done, I begin the publishing process.

What is the easiest part of your writing process?

Coming up with book ideas is pretty easy for me. I get the ideas from Bible study. Since God’s Word is such an amazing book, it is full of lessons and topics to explore which could each be turned into a book that could bless someone. My challenge is there is not enough time to write about many topics. I really enjoy sharing things that bless me from the Bible, so I have to narrow down book ideas to ones that are timely or that may apply to a large audience.

Give us an insight into your faith in the Lord.

My faith in the Lord received a big boost in high school. I was conflicted about the Bible’s record of creation verses the ideas of evolution that we were taught. At the time I thought there was no evidence for the Bible. However, God blessed me to hear about real scientific evidence that matched what He said in the Bible. That confirmation has helped me through the years as I’ve studied the Bible and found it to be completely reliable. Knowing that I can trust what God said means I can trust Him with my life. Of course, I don’t do that perfectly, but I am grateful that I don’t have to rely on myself to navigate life in this crazy world.

Is your book part of a series?

My newest book was not intentionally written to be part of a series. However, after it was finished, I realized it was a great introduction to my first book. Have You Heard from God Lately? works to answer the essential questions of life by introducing (or reminding) people of major themes in the Bible. It is a wonderful resource to assist someone in getting acquainted with God and the Bible or begin to get serious about a relationship with Jesus. It turned out to be a great lead in to my first book, Seeking the Lord, a 30 Day Start to Your Journey, which helps people grow with God over a lifetime.

Tell us something unique about yourself.

Like many boys I was fascinated with space, the planets, and stars as a kid. However, unlike many of them, I had a real plan to get there. I studied aerodynamics in college and became a Navy Pilot. In graduate school, I applied to NASA’s astronaut program twice. It was a big application process and since I was on active duty, had to get the Navy to sign off, as well. The second rejection letter basically said NASA was not taking more applications. I didn’t know how long that would last, but after finishing my master’s degree the Navy sent me to a new assignment, and I had to focus my attention on other things. I’m still fascinated with the heavens and for now enjoy looking at them from Earth.
