About the Author
Kate Darroch lives on the picturesque Devon coastline, where she combines her passion for cozy sleuths and her experiences of life as it’s lived in many countries to create compelling Travel Cozies.
Màiri Maguire, a Scots Irish teacher from 1970s Glasgow, heroine of debut novel, “Death in Paris”, has earned Kate many international book awards, including Readers Favorite Gold Medal for Humor, consolidating her reputation as a notable author. Kate hopes her readers will enjoy Màiri’s adventures as much as she enjoys Father Brown, Sherlock Holmes, and that old, old movie, the Perils of Pauline.
Next, Kate created Huntingdon Hart, a dry, witty, prescient, multi-millionaire, tongue-in-cheek cross between James Bond and Sherlock Holmes, who’s in love with a much older woman.
Kate’s most recent work is the Christian Second Chance for Lasting Love series, Sweets By the Sea, a saga of Recovery and Redemption; which her readers say is even sweeter than Màiri’s adventures.
More from Kate
If you want incident-crammed stories that seamlessly integrate Christian values, you’re in the right place. Why is that? Because my own Christian faith is a seamless part of my life. How can you separate everyday life and faith? Don’t ask me, because I can’t.
I wrote Màiri Maguire to make people laugh during a dark time; and I wrote Eric and Lily to give hope and understanding to the families of addicts in recovery, to shine a light on thought processes and emotions which are opaque to most of us; and which those of us with a friend or loved one in recovery would like to understand better. Because I’m a storyteller, not a counsellor, I also tried to tell you a story that would make you both laugh and cry, a story worth taking time to enjoy. I hope that you will decide to spend a little time with Eric and Lily, and that you will find the expenditure of your time to be worthwhile.

Interview
Do you have a scene you love in your newest release?
My most recent novel, Thanksgiving in Welcombe Bay, is a story of recovery, redemption, and forgiveness, with sweet romance peeking out from the corners. For both Lily and Eric, their Meet Cute is a second chance for lasting love.
My favorite scenes in any of my stories are the ones which stretch me as a writer.
It was a new experience for me to be writing in the style and about the subject matter of the Prologue for this book, which is a courtroom scene. I enjoyed writing it very much.
Another favorite was the scene where Eric feels the need to take a drink. It’s a powerful, very emotional scene. When I wrote it, I was crying so hard that I couldn’t see the computer screen. I had to go back later to check that I hadn’t missed out words or letters because my hands had been shaking so hard while I was hitting the keyboard. For a miracle, I hadn’t. There was nothing I wanted to change. That’s very unusual for me. Like Sol Stein I believe that “writing is re-writing”. But this scene came straight from the heart. I didn’t change a word.
What foods do you eat when writing to keep you going?
When I’m working, I grudge the time to eat. I throw something in the oven and as often as not it’s over-cooked. Half the time I work on through a mealtime and don’t even feel hungry. I snack on nuts, oatcakes and cheese, and fruit; and drink a lot of sparkling mineral water.
If you could vacation anywhere, where would you go?
My niece keeps asking me to go to Mauritius with her and her husband and children. I would love to explore the island with them.
What do you plan to work on next?
This morning a new idea came to me, a gift from God. I hastily scribbled it down in my notebook, because when a new idea comes, I have to capture it with a pencil on paper, I can’t type fast enough to keep up with my muse. I must finish the book I’m in the middle of writing right now first, Death in Europe, but as soon as I’ve done that I’ll begin to write the new idea.
It’s the story of a lawman who falls in love with a woman whom his family and his whole community consider to be a social pariah because of her origins. They want him to marry someone “suitable” but he is determined to marry the one he loves. He isn’t sure whether she’s marrying him because she loves him or just because he represents safety and security within a community where her position is very precarious. She is consumed by the need to do her duty, which she sees as helping her people to become accepted members of the antagonistic society in which they are all trapped. She doesn’t believe that she’s “allowed” any personal feelings.
I am also working on the edit for my first Huntingdon Hart novel, To Serve My King and I will probably write some more Màiri stories to keep up my spirits while I’m working on the new-idea novel.
